XX. ’48 Dodge
I’ve made it to my twentieth little sculpture! That went by fast. I often wonder if the Roman Numerals throw people off, they don’t teach that stuff anymore in school. But I have a newfound appreciation for them as straight lines are much easier to carve than the curved Arabic numbers. But I digress. This piece is a replica of the hood ornament used on the 1948 Dodge pickup truck, hence the name. We don’t get cool sculptures on our cars anymore like this one, a nifty Art Deco affair of a charging ram that was on a relatively plain and no-frills truck. Truth be told, I think it’s actually a 1950 as I had one once which explains why I had the hood ornament, but I don’t think anyone will notice. I originally intended to incorporate the actual hood ornament into a piece and may still someday, but I think this replica turned out great. I didn’t realize the hood ornament had so much detail until I started carving it into stone. It seemed only fitting to have the charging ram bursting forth from the stone- there is actually a back half on the ornament. Or maybe I just got lazy. Anyway, I’m going to call it a 5 out of 5, I really liked how it turned out and there were no surprises apart from a bit of coral imbedded in the ram’s hip that was a bit troublesome to work. I’m calling it 5 out of 5, simply because I impressed myself!
