XVIII. Dapple

Dapple? What’s a “Dapple?” That would be the name of Sancho Panza’s trusty donkey. Who is Sancho Panza? Why, he was the sidekick to Miguel de Cervante’s hero Don Quixote, a book you should have read in high school literature. Don’t feel bad if you didn’t- I think I read the black and yellow version myself, the one written by Cliff Notes. Anyway, Sancho rode a donkey while Don Quixote road a horse in pursuit of…well, just read the book. This donkey actually took its inspiration from a ceramic horse sculpture of my in-laws, a very simple representational piece that I was going to copy faithfully at first, but chose instead to go more donkey-like so I could put my own turn on things. It was made from a piece of scrap stone, but unfortunately there are a lot of occlusions and other rock veins running through the stone, so while I like how the shape of it turned out, I would have been happier with a better piece of stone! So I’m going with 4 out of 5 for this one. Gotta get some better stone…
