VIII. La Luna
If I did a representation of the sun, then naturally a moon was next. This is another relatively simple piece- but making a near-perfect circle and rounding it to a section of a sphere was not as easy as it sounds. This again is Silverdale limestone, chosen because when it was rounded the layers in the stone would come out and give an interesting lunar surface. The moon is in the shape of a Waning Gibbus, transitioning into a full moon. The crescent was done by roughing the surface and rubbing it with graphite to stain it, then sealing the surface with stone sealer (so hopefully it never rubs off). This piece is special as it was the cause of my first ever trip to the emergency room! An angle grinder mishap resulted in 6 stitches to the back of my hand, unfortunately. Always leave the safety features on your tools, kids! 4 out of 5, because it hurt me.
